Autumn Reset: 10 Cozy Ways to Rebalance

autumn reset

Ready for an autumn reset? October is like that sweet spot where the chaos of summer finally cools off, and everything feels a little more grounded. I get Summer SAD so when October hits I finally start to feel like me again. I can go outside and not feel like I’m melting, I can have my windows open in the morning, I just feel more human and so much happier. Like a weight is lifted off of me. The leaves start to turn, pumpkin spice makes its grand comeback (it’s my favorite – I don’t care what anyone else says!), and there’s a kind of natural invitation to slow down and check in with yourself. If you’re anything like me, you might have had a busy year, and October offers the perfect chance to hit the “reset” button before the whirlwind of the holidays starts.

So, let’s talk about some cozy and simple ways to rebalance your life this month – these are also some great tips if you’re susceptible to the winter blues or Winter SAD. Grab a warm drink, wrap yourself in a soft blanket, and let’s reset together!

1. Create Your Autumn Sanctuary

You know that feeling when you walk into a space that just feels so cozy that your shoulders automatically drop and you just feel good? The lighting is soft, there’s a hint of cinnamon in the air, and everything seems to whisper, “You’re safe here.” That’s the vibe we’re going for! Start by tweaking your space to make it feel like the cozy cocoon you need. Think string lights, soft throws, and a candle that smells like all your fall dreams.

I decorated my living room for autumn last month (way premature for Oklahoma) but it made me happy to focus on my space and to make it cute.

Self-Care Tip: Declutter the space a bit first. There’s something magical about removing a little chaos from your environment, making room for all that cozy energy.

2. Practice “Leaf Therapy”

Okay, I may have made that term up, but stick with me. As the trees start shedding their leaves, it’s a reminder for us to let go, too. What are you holding onto that isn’t serving you anymore? Whether it’s a mindset, a relationship, or that project you swear you’ll get to but haven’t touched all year, it’s okay to let it fall away. Nature’s letting go and it’s a reminder that you can too.

3. Cozy Up Your Routines

October is the perfect time to revisit your daily routines and see what needs a little extra warmth. Maybe your morning routine needs a new element like a hot cup of tea on the porch, or your bedtime routine could use a “no screens after 9 pm” rule to help you wind down.

It’s the small, intentional changes that make everything feel a little more balanced. I still haven’t had a lot of cool mornings but when they come – I go outside with my coffee and a blanket and just enjoy the morning birds. No joke it makes my day 100x better.

4. Prioritize Rest (and Actually Enjoy It)

We all need rest. It’s not a guilty pleasure it’s a necessity. Give yourself permission to rest without guilt. That means naps, slow mornings, and maybe even a lazy Sunday where your to-do list consists of “drink hot cocoa” and “read a good book.”

5. Embrace “No”

October is a fantastic time to practice setting boundaries, especially before the holiday hustle hits. That social event you don’t actually want to attend? It’s okay to say no and protect your energy. Like, if you need permission to not feel bad about it, I’m giving it to you!

6. Indulge in Cozy Rituals

You know those little things that make you feel like life is a warm hug? Do more of that. Whether it’s lighting a pumpkin-scented candle every evening, making your family’s favorite soup recipe, or having a cozy movie night with your favorite snacks where you watch a ton of zombie movies, let yourself lean into these moments.

7. Reconnect with Nature

Go outside, open the curtains or the windows, give yourself a little bit of that wonderful autumn sunshine. There’s something so healing about crisp autumn air and the crunch of leaves under your feet and it gives you a great opportunity to get a little vitamin D without melting.

8. Set Small, Intentional Goals

(Which are my favorite) When it comes to goals, I never focus on the big ones because I’m a firm believer that it’s the small ones that actually get us places. So this October, focus on small, intentional changes. Choose one or two things that will make you feel more aligned with your awesome self, and don’t overwhelm yourself with too many changes at once.

9. Celebrate Your Progress

Before you dive into what’s next, take a moment to celebrate what you’ve already done this year. Even if you just made it through to this point that’s something. What have you accomplished? How have you grown? Sometimes, resetting means giving yourself credit for the progress you’ve already made.

10. Savor the Slow Moments

Lastly, don’t forget to savor the slowness of this season. Life doesn’t always have to be about the hustle. Light a candle, sip a hot drink, and just sit in the quiet for a few minutes. Enjoy the stillness and give yourself permission to simply be.

What’s your favorite way to get a little autumn reset?
