In todayโs increasingly frantic and fast-paced world, itโs getting harder to turn the volume down. Weโre more connected to the world around us than ever, and that can be equal parts blessing and curse. Itโs great to be connected with the people who are close to us (especially for a socially anxious introvert like me!).
I love being able to see the latest news from all over the world via a few dabs at a touchscreen but when I’m anxious or sad I’ve learned that I have to create boundaries.
Being constantly connected can add stress, anxiety, and sensory overload and letting all of that get to us takes us away from all of the amazing things that are happening in our lives..
It’s a fine balance between connection and stepping away so that you can experience the things (and people) around you.
The power of inner peace
When the world feels a little too much we need to be able to channel our way to inner peace. Find our zen. Bliss out. The ability to find a still and quiet place within yourself is part of what self-care is all about.
Knowing what things get you in a calm headspace makes it easier to put your coping skills into practice when things start getting tough.
Here are some things that can start you on the journey.
Listen to the words of peace ambassadors
Youโre not alone in your quest to find inner peace. There are many out there who have encountered the same struggles as you and now work to help promote peace by inspiring others and giving them practical tips to help them find theirs.
People who have helped me find my peace: Snatam Kaur, Ram Dass, Nirinjan Kaur, and Krishna Das.
Meditate or practice yoga
I love Yoga and Meditation and it has always helped me calm my mind and feel better about myself but in spite of that, I often find myself mindless scrolling through social media while telling myself I’ll do yoga “later” and I always regret it because it feels so good when I actually do it.
Yoga can help to unify body and mind through stretching and strengthening the muscles, regulating breathing and helping the mind to assert more control over the body.
Even if you donโt feel up to the task of doing yoga poses, try sparing a few minutes for some mindfulness meditation. This helps you to block out distractions and intrusive thoughts by focusing only on breathing. Just 5 minutes a day can make a real difference.
I’m going to try to commit to five minutes of something every day this week.
Find your comfort blanket
Not literally. At least not necessarily literally! When we were in our childhood years we had certain totems that would bring us comfort and help us feel relaxed and at peace.
This might be a blanket, a teddy bear or even a hot bowl of soup. Finding these totems and reconnecting with them can help to take our minds back to a simpler and more peaceful time.
Cuddling up with my electric blanket always calms and soothes me. A little vial of lavender oil that I can put on my chest, makes me feel better. My favorite Harry Potter pajamas make me happy.
Find what comforts you!
Spend some time with pets
Finally, thereโs no better way to find peace than by spending time with animals. Even if you donโt have pets at home it may be worth trying to find an animal sanctuary or petting zoo somewhere near you so that you can spend time basking in the gentle aura of other, more innocent, creatures. Even being with the birds and squirrels in the park can be an amazing balm to the spirit.
