Morning Routine: Fill Your Morning With Self-Care

I have a confession to make, a few weeks ago, I was a grumpy bear in the mornings. I’d wake up with a groan, after abusing my snooze button multiple times. I’d lay in bed trying to convince myself that I could get out of bed in just 30 more seconds, which turned into another and another until I’d have 15 minutes to shower, get dressed, and get out the door for work. Needless to say, my morning routine was not a great start to my day.

Lately, I’ve been struggling with a pretty bad bout of depression. Nothing new for me, it’s round 82 in my life. However, when I get in this space I know that I have to do an overhaul on my life to get to feeling better. One of those things (aside from epically upping the self-care) is to focus on my morning and evening routines.

Here are some great ways to create a good morning routine.

I’m going to be real honest, I’m probably never going to be the kind of girl that jumps out of bed at 6:00 am for a full yoga routine while drinking a green smoothie, journaling for an hour, and 30 minutes of meditation. Always remember to tailor your self-care to your personality and your life, screw what anyone else says.

Shower Magic

My morning shower is my favorite part of my day because it helps me feel like an actual human being again. I stumble sleepily into the bathroom, put on some good music, get in the shower and sing my heart out. Let me tell you, the sound of my loud singing voice sure does wake me up. If I’m feeling fancy, I’ll put a few drops of essential oil on the wall to be picked up by the steam of the shower. It is heaven.

Good Music

Good is subjective. I’ve been known to blast Friday by Rebecca Black some mornings. Let music set the tone for your day. Choose happy, upbeat, songs that make you want to move and dance. Dancing to a good song gets you moving and gets the blood flowing just like a yoga routine would, and it’s so much fun. My Favorites: All I Do Is Win by DJ Khaled and I’ve Gotta A Feeling by the Black Eyed Peas and anything from the Trolls soundtrack.

Good Drink + Good Reads

Whether it’s coffee, tea, or a green smoothie – don’t just grab a drink on the go, sit down and enjoy it, even if it’s only for a few minutes. I’ve been giving myself five minutes a day, just five, to sit down with my morning drink and browse the internet. Most times I head over to Blog Lovin’ and catch up with my favorite blogs. It’s a bit more nourishing than the mindless Facebook scrolling that was my go-to upon waking.

Smelly Things

I love aromatherapy. Not only do I occasionally use it to scent my shower, I also wear one oil, usually lavender, every day. It instantly puts my mind in a pleasant happy place. I also burn incense, use wax melts, and homemade air freshener. Having a home that smells good and comforting to me is one my favorite things about the morning. Add in open windows and fresh air? Yaaaas.

Plan Your Day

But not in a way where you’re trying to cram as much stuff as possible into it. Be realistic about what you’re expecting for yourself. Plan in a “recess” for yourself where you take a break, go outside, get yourself some air, a bit of rest, and a bit of time to check in with your needs. Take the time to watch your favorite show, or paint, or do something that will genuinely make you happy.

Creating a nourishing routine can instantly change your mindset.

My challenge to you this week is to try to find a way to improve your morning routine.
