My Word of the Year For 2015

I first learned from Create Your Shining Year Planner how to choose a word-of-the-year instead (or into addition to!) a New Year’s resolution. I don’t know about you but I kinda forget my resolutions after awhile, no matter how well meaning I am. Picking a word is less stringent and it allows us to kinda go with the flow without feeling like a failure because we aren’t doing the things we said we were going to do. If that sounds like you maybe you should join us. We pick a word to represent what we want to do/feel/embody for the year. It can be something that you want to bring into your life or a trait that you want to cultivate within yourself.

Keep that word. Let it be at the forefront of your thoughts.

Let it guide you and teach you what it’s in your life to teach you.

For example, if you want to start eating better maybe the word Nourish would be a good word. Instead of beating yourself up for your terrible eating habits focus on giving yourself nourishment – foods that make you feel good. It’s all about your approach. Nourish sounds way better than diet and the connotations are healthier for your mind too.

If you could pick any word right now to represent you in 2015 what would it be? Maybe something comes to you or maybe it doesn’t. Look at the word cloud above, what’s the first word that stands out? What words resonate with you? Is there one that just keeps echoing in your mind?

Let your heart choose the word for you.

It took me awhile to come up with my word. I’ve unintentionally gone with words that begin with the letter ‘s’. Surrender, Shine, and last year’s word was Strength. I started working on this post without knowing what my own word would be. As I was compiling a list of suggestions for you I kept waiting for one to jump out of me but it didn’t. While I was taking a break, okay let’s be honest, I was browsing facebook, I saw a quote that just made my heart go pitter patter.

I hold myself back a lot in the things that I do. I hold myself back from loving, from putting all of myself into a project, from believing fully that I am on the right path. There’s always that part of me that’s holding back out of self-preservation. Have I mentioned I’m just a wee bit of a commitment-phobe?

“Depth” is my word for the year.

And I love it. It brings to my mind images of deep seas (water is associated with emotions), mermaids, calm waters, and turbulent tides. Of feelings things completely and fully. Exploring thoroughly into those scary dark corners. Getting deep within my writing and my art. Getting to know my heart more profoundly.

There’s this meditation called the Cliff that I absolutely love. You might have heard me speak of it. It starts off with you imagining that you’re standing on the edge of a cliff at sunrise over the ocean, watching the colors blossom across the sky. You lean forward, allowing yourself to fall from the edge and as you reach the water you sprout wings and glide over the surface of the water. Then you dive deep into the depths of the ocean where you rest there in perfect calm and silence. I just love that part. That deep and silent part of ourselves is a beautiful place to be.

I want to explore the depths of all of my feelings instead of just the surface.

So you know I’m curious! What’s your word of the year?
