Self Care: Unplug From Social Media

Hi, my name is Dominee, and I absolutely love social media and the internet but I also know how important it is to unplug. As someone who is super introverted, it’s the perfect way to make connections and not feel so alone in the world.

That being said, it’s still good to unplug.

There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. I am guilty of checking Facebook and Instagram 80 billion times a day. I’m guilty of laying in bed and scrolling… scrolling…scrolling and suddenly it’s an hour past my bedtime. When it comes to social media, there is good and bad. This week, I’ve been focusing on stepping back just a little bit.

I’m guilty of being glued to my phone. It’s not just social media for me, although that’s a big part of it. When I’m not on my computer I still have to be “connected”. I have to answer questions on social media, emails, moderate two Facebook groups, write newsletters and so many other things.

In this experiment with NaBloPoMo and intentional self-care, I’m trying to be less plugged in, at least for this week.

There are other ways to combine self-care and social media.

Unfollow the people that stress you out.

We all have that friend. They post things that go against your beliefs in an inflammatory way. They’re always posting dramatic relationship statuses and that feel like a soap opera. You find their sense of humor tasteless and their memes annoy you. They’re always trying to sell you something to get you to join the latest weight-loss trend.

Follow what fills you up.

My social media is all about the things that inspire me and make me feel good about myself. I unfollow the people that bring me down and I follow a ton of artists, body positivity activists, inspirational quotes, and things that make me feel good.
