The “Mehs” are that feeling you get when you’re sitting at home and then suddenly nothing sounds appealing. You don’t want to do all of those things that you usually want to do. Life feels blah and you sit there the whole day in this pool of apathy wondering
“Why don’t I want to do anything?”
Call it a funk, the blahs, a mood – it sucks and it’s frustrating! Especially on days where you want to be productive but YOU. JUST. CAN’T.
I was feeling this way the other day. It went like – open to empty blog post, close blog post, check Facebook, close Facebook, load up World of Warcraft, close World of Warcraft, stare blankly at the wall, decide to watch tv, stare blankly at tv, turn off tv, think about food, try to decide if I’m really hungry, then if the hunger is worth the effort, and then decide no, then an internal scream of
“I don’t want to do anything!”
And contemplate ripping hair out.
I have these days every few months and just in case you have them too I wanted to give you a few tips to stop you from losing your mind.
Don’t get frustrated.
Full disclosure here. In the past The Mehs has literally made me cry. It’s so frustrating when your inner self is acting like a two-year-old who doesn’t want to nap, have a snack, play with toys, or go outside. You know that it should be easy to get yourself to be interested in something but no matter how hard you try everything is just “Meh.”
Don’t freak out, you’re not going to feel this forever. You will be interested in life again. One wasted afternoon of The Mehs is not the end of the world, despite the glares your to-do list is throwing your way.
Be epic in your self-care.
One reason for The Mehs is burn-out. It’s your mind’s way of saying “We’re working too hard, we’re doing too much, and you aren’t listening so LISTEN.”
So do what your brain and body is telling you to do – listen. Do your self-care. Muster up the energy to have a cup of tea and relax. Confront those feelings that you’ve been pushing aside about something that has happened in your life that you haven’t been ready to face. Self-care is about honoring what you need emotionally/physically/spiritually/mentally.
Take a Nap.
Sometimes the only thing to do is take a nap. Napping is the restart button for humans. If nothing is feeling appealing to you take a little cat nap and see if you wake up a bit more motivated and even if you don’t – rest is good for you.
Get out of your head and your routine.
Change things up. Sometimes all you need is a change in your routine. Being stagnant, not letting yourself grow or move or live can cause a serious case of life-mehs. If something isn’t working – try something new. Let that be your mantra.
A change of scenery might be just what you need. Start a new show (comedies are best in my opinion!), go out and window shop at a new store, read a new blog, listen to a new CD… make a change in your life!
Shake things up and see if it chases the Mehs away.
Embrace the stillness.
Just be with your meh. Relax and sit back and just let the feeling pass. Embrace the ebb and the flow of your energy. Go where it goes. Don’t fight against it. Let yourself be in it.
Talk to a friend.
Just venting to someone can make you feel a ton better. Call someone up, lay on the sofa and text, go out and get food with your bestie. Reach out on Facebook for hugs and good vibes and know that even if you may not be feeling worthwhile there are tons of people out there ready and willing to tell you how much you rock.
When I get The Mehs it helps to: take a nap (naps can be productive too!) or get moving. I’ve found that if I just start something, whether that be going for a walk or exercising or writing in my journal, whatever, I’m more likely to keep going. An object in motion stays in motion and all that.
I like ALL of these suggestions!
When I have a case of the MEHs it is usually a sign I am emotionally constipated. I sit down with my journal and free write, which often frees the emotional blockage. Some interesting stuff can come out when I do that.
