What’s Your Song For 2014?

Every year I pick a song to be my theme song. It’s kinda like my Word-of-the-Year but not. It’s a song that speaks to my soul, that gives me goosebumps and that I can listen to for a quick pick me up whenever I need one. It reminds me of who I am when I have a moment of forgetfulness. Music sinks into your bones and your brain like that. Last year’s song was “Spotlight” by Patrick Stump. I never thought I’d find a song to top it, that song is just beautiful to me in so many ways, and so is the video. It went great with my word for last year: Shine.

You could be your own spotlight/ You could be the star, you could shine so bright/ You could be your own spotlight

This year it took me forever to decide on a song. I listened to my playlist of inspirational music. All of my favorites, songs with the word “strong” in them, because that’s my word of the year, but still, nothing fit exactly the way I wanted it to. I was expecting to pick a song that made me want to rock out and shake my fist in the air with a “Hell Yeah!”. “Raise Your Glass” by Pink was a close contender but it just didn’t feel 100% right. Then I remembered India Arie’s “I Am Light” and I knew that it was perfect. It’s not loud, it doesn’t make me want to get up and dance, but it touches and calms something deep inside of me and it makes me feel whole and complete.

I am not the things my family did
I am not the voices in my head
I am not the pieces of the brokenness inside

The whole song is a reminder of how beautiful our souls are. We are more than the things that happen to us. We are more than the things that we do. Our souls are light no matter how much darkness we pull towards ourselves.

Today I am sharing with you a bonus worksheet for you to print out and add to the 2014 Self Love Planner: Soundtrack 2014 (Black&White copy). This will let you come up with your song for the year as well as make a list of songs that make you happy. Consult when having a bad day! Your song doesn’t need to be anything especially deep, as long as it puts a smile on your face or a squishy happy feeling in your insides, that’s the most important part!
